KC Chiefs 2001 Opening Animation
One of my first 'big' projects as an animator/modeller/fx artist, this was the 50-second-long pregame animation for the Kansas City Chiefs. It runs about 1 min before kickoff of every home game, the goal being to get the crowd a bit more 'pumped up' right before kickoff. The premise of this animation was a 'building the perfect Chief' theme, where various great Chiefs players over the years were analyzed and parts choosen to add to a robotic football player. Each part would sort of 'scan' in and be picked up and attached to the main robot. The team logo (arrowhead) was dropped into the chest and was the 'heart' of the robot. Footage of Chiefs fans was then 'analyzed' and then used to sort of bring the robot to life, converting him from robot to human (x-ray shots). Finally the new super-Chief confronts and destroys the opposing team (the uniforms of which were swapped out every game, to match the opponent). This was a killer project for me, requiring lots of evenings and weekends for a couple months, but the end product was worth it i think. This project also taught me a gigantic amount about streamlining production (usually AFTER i did it the hard way first ;). All done in 3dsmax 3.1 and rendered thru the max scanline renderer, lots of compositing in after effects as well. As a side note, the black borders around all the images are because of the formatting of the big screens in Arrowhead stadium, as they crop the frame down a bit.
